Brother Embroidery Software BE-100

Version 2.10
Release Notes

August, 2001

Thank you for purchasing Brother Embroidery Software, BE-100 ver.2.0. BE-100 is an exciting step forward for embroidery design. Fast, easy, and powerful, you will find that BE-100 is more than capable of handling your embroidery needs.

What's New in Version 2.10

1.The importing of TrueType font text has been added as an optional feature.
To use this feature, you need to purchase the optional software, which will be provided with a disk. Once you activate the feature, you can use any TrueType fonts that have been installed to your computer system to make embroidery text.
This function also allows you to input two or more different language letters in a text,
by switching the keyboard language.

When importing TrueType font text, the following points should be kept in mind.

1.1. Riched20.dll
Importing TrueType uses one of the Windows system files, Riched20.dll.
Riched20.dll is supposed to be installed as a standard feature of Windows 98, Windows 2000 or later version of Windows, but it is not a standard feature of Windows 95. However, Riched20.dll is also used by some Microsoft products, such as MS-Word 97. Therefore, it is possible that Riched20.dll has already been installed even if your computer is Windows 95. You can check whether Riched20.dll has been installed or not to your computer by following the steps below.

 (1) Click on Start button on the Windows task bar.
 (2) Point to Find and then click on Files or Folders.
 (3) In Find dialog, type "Riched20.dll" in Named box and choose Local Hard Drives in Look in list box and then click on Find Now button.
 (4) If Riched20.dll is found in Windows\System folder, it means the file has already been installed.

If Riched20.dll has not been installed in your computer, you can install it by installing an application software, Word Viewer 97, that Microsoft provides as a free software. You can install Word Viewer 97 by following the steps below.

 (1) Download the Word Viewer 97 installation file, wd97vwr32.exe, from the following Microsoft web page.
 http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/downloadDetails/wd97vwr32.htm
Or use the same file in BE-100 ver.2.0 CD if you have.
 (2) Run wd97vwr32.exe by double-clicking on the file name.
 (3) Complete the setup program.

1.2. How to use Importing TrueType
A new tool button, TrueType tool, has been added. Normally, the tool button is located in lower left part of the BE-100 main window and it looks like "TT" icon.

Note: If the TrueType tool button does not appear in the main window, click on View menu, click on Toolbars and then check if TrueType check box is turned on.

To import text of TrueType font as embroidery data, follow the steps below.

 (1) Click on TrueType tool.
 (2) Punch the start point of the text baseline in the design window.
If you right click, instead of left click, the start point is set at (0, 0) and also the next step #3 will be skipped.
 (3) Punch the end point of the text baseline in the design window.
Note:
At this version, Importing TrueType supports only horizontal line text and the text length will be changed depending on the each entered letter size. Therefore, the end point of the text base line will not be a real end point of text.
 (4) In Insert TrueType Text dialog, choose a TrueType font name from the dropdown list box. All of the available TrueType fonts for the current keyboard language will be listed in the dropdown list box.
 (5) Specify Size, Style and Multiline Spacing. The size will be the actual sewing height of letters. Multiline spacing is the length between the text base line of the previous line and the highest point of the current line. In other words, Size + Multiline Spacing means the distance between the two base lines.
 (6) Enter letters in Text box. You can change the size and the style for the letters anytime while you are entering letters. The changes of the settings will be applied to the letters that are entered after the changing and will not affect the letters that were entered before the changing. To change the size and the style of the letters that have already been entered, select the letters first by using Shift + mouse dragging or Shift + arrow key operation.
 (7) Click on OK. The entered text will be converted to Region and Path shapes and be imported to the design window.
Note:
It may take a couple of minutes before the text is imported depending on the number of the entered letters.

1.3. Switching languages
Insert TrueType Text dialog allows you to enter multiple-language text. For example, you can enter letters of English, Greek and Thai in a text line. To enter multiple-language text, the following three settings need to be set up.

     - Multiple-language support of Windows system
     - Keyboard language for the target language
     - TrueType fonts for the target language

To install multiple-language support in Windows, follow the steps below.

(1) Click on Start, point to Settings, and then click on Control Panel.
(2) In Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
(3) Click on Windows Setup tab.
(4) Click on Multilanguage Support check box to select it.
(5) Click on OK.
To enable support for the target language for the keyboard, follow the steps below.
(1) In Control Panel, double-click on Keyboard.
(2) On Language tab, click on Add.
(3) Click on the language you want to use, and then click on OK.
(4) Click on Enable Indicator on Taskbar to select it.
(5) Click on OK.

After following the above steps, the indicator icon will appear in the right side of
Windows Taskbar. You can switch the keyboard language to the other one by
clicking on the icon while entering letters in BE-100 TrueType dialog.

1.4. Quality of the generated embroidery data
TrueType font was developed for displaying text on a screen and for printing document on a paper. Therefore, unlike BE-100 embroidery font, the font does not have any embroidery-oriented attributions, such as stitch density or sewing sequence. The Importing TrueType function in BE-100 automatically calculates such attributions from only the letter shape that the TrueType font has and converts the letter shape to BE-100 Region and Path shapes. However, in some cases, the converted shapes need to be edited to make better stitches. We recognize that this is not a bug but one of the technical restrictions. If the letter shape is relatively simple, it will not need to be edited in most cases. Conversely, if the letter shape is very complicated, it may need to be edited. You can use Reshape tool to edit them.

Note: Reshape tool is available in Feature Level 3, which is the Editing level, or higher.

2. Support has been added to Output dialog for outputting sewing data to any drive    or folder.
To output a data file to a drive other than the floppy drive, follow the steps below.

(1) Go to menu, File/Output Design. Output Design dialog will appear.
(2) Click on Brows button.
(3) Since the system tries to check the floppy drive first, the message like "The device is not ready" will appear if no disk is in the floppy drive. In this case, click on Cancel.
(4) Choose Directory dialog will appear and choose the destination drive and folder.
(5) After choosing the destination, type a file name and click on OK.
 Note:
The Brows button will be disabled if "BAS-416 Serial" is selected in Machine menu in Output Design dialog.

3. The default number of needles has been increased from 9 to 12.

4. The following new information has been added in About BES dialog.
(1) The version number of the attached security key.
(2) The expiration date of the attached security key if it is demo key.
(3) The remaining use count of the attached security key if it is demo key.

5. Contour direction for Polygon Fill is available again.
This feature had been eliminated since version 1.40, but is now an option again.

6. The option, Medium sized stitches, in Text Effect property has been removed.

7. Master Palette for Coats Alcazar thread colors is available
Two different Master Palettes are available. The standard Master Palette is preset with the colors for Madeira threads and the optional Master Palette is preset with the colors for Coats Alcazar threads. These are alternative and can not be used at the same time. To switch the Master Palette with Madeira colors to the Master Palette with Coats Alcazar colors, follow the steps below.

(1) Open the folder, BES\Config.
(2) To make a back up of the current Master Palette, rename the file, "Master Palette.dat" to "Master Palette.dat.MDR".
(3) Rename the file, "Master Palette.dat.coats" to "Master Palette.dat".
(4) Restart BE-100.
Note:
In the case that you have added your own color to the current Master Palette, it will not appeared in new Master Palette if you switched it.

8. Support has been added to Spooler for .DST files.
To send .DST files to Brother machines, you do not need to run BE-100 and output the designs to "BAS-416 Serial" anymore. You can simply copy .DST files to BES\Spool folder by using Windows Explorer or My Computer and download them to the machines.
When using Spooler ver.2.0, the following points should be kept in mind.

  - The number of jumps for trim should be set first. To set the number, go to the menu, File/DST Trim Setup, in the Spooler window and chose a number from the list in the dialog. The setting will be maintained in the system registry.
  - Spooler will automatically convert all .DST files in BES\Spool folder to Spooler's data files, .STH file. As a result, the copied .DST files will be deleted.
  - If there is a .STH file which has the same file name as the .DST file name which is being copied to BES\Spool folder, the file will be overwritten with the new data.
  - The maximum number of .STH files that machines can access is 224. If more than the maximum number of .STH files are stored in the folder, some of the files can not be downloaded to the machines.

9. Several standard fonts have been improved and renamed.
The following table shows the improved fonts and the new font names.

Replaced Fonts New Fonts
California Script Chelsea Italic
Collegetown Cambridge Two
Collegetown Block Cambridge
Collegetown Outline Cambridge Outline
DENVER SCRIPT Kingston
European Epsom
Georgia Glasgow Regular
Newfoundland Norfolk Regular
Phoenix Script Colon Italic
Tallahassee Tasmania Regular
Totstown Torino

When you upgrade your BE-100 from ver.1.x to ver. 2.x, you may want to keep the old fonts to maintain the saved BDF files, which include text shapes with the fonts. If you upgrade BE-100 to ver.2.x by just overwriting on the old one, the old fonts will be still available. In some reason, if you need to uninstall the old version of BE-100 before installing ver.2.x, you should make back up copies of the font files and just restore them to BES/Fonts folder after installing ver.2.x. The fonts will be available with the new version of BE-100.

10. Support for Brother PE-Design .PES file ver.4.0 has been added.

11. A bug that the text in Font list, Ruler, Gallery button and a printout page
are not shown properly in a specific computer system has been corrected
.

12. Several menus and messages in Finnish have been modified.

Improvments in Version 2.10 from Version 2.00

1. The setup program is now compatible with Wndows NT/2000 registry system.
Note:
Althogh the setup became compatible with NT/2000 system, it is NOT guaranteed officially to use BE-100 on NT/2000 system because some features do not function on NT/2000 system.
For example, Non-Dos disk read and write feature does not function on NT/2000 because of the device driver compatibility problem.
2. Support has been added to control to print the start/end marker and connection lines.
In File/ Page Setup/ Sewout tab, there are two new check boxes, Connections and Start/End Marker to turn on or off printing connection lins and start/end marker.
