<<INSTRUCTIONS ON UPGRADING THE PRINT SERVER>>

There are 3 different methods of loading firmware across the network using the BRAdmin32 application. However, HL-1270N users upgrading from version 1.xx to version 2.xx are not able to use the NetWare upgrade option as version 1.xx firmware does not support the IPX/SPX protocol. Users will a NC-2010h, NC-2100h or NC-2010p can use the NetWare firmware upgrade option if they wish. If you do not wish to use the BRAdmin32 application, you can also upgrade using a parallel cable attached to your PC and printer.

1. TFTP PUT (upgrade from your PC)
If you are using the TCP/IP protocol on your PC, this is the easiest way of upgrading firmware inside the print server. Simply select the device that you wish to upgrade and specify the password of the print server. BRAdmin32 will then automatically send the new firmware file to the designated print server/s.

2. TFTP GET (retrieve from a TFTP server)
This method of loading firmware requires that you have a TFTP server on your network. This is typically a UNIX host that has been set up to support TFTP services. You will need to copy the file into a directory that can be accessed by the TFTP server (you must create a folder called TFTPBOOT from the root directory of the Unix system and then copy the firmware file into that directory. You must ensure that the print server can read the file, to do this use the 'chmod' command. For example, 'chmod 666 filename' will make sure that the print server can read the file. Please also note that Unix filenames are case sensitive, so be careful when specifying filename details.

To begin with, select one or more print servers from the list on the main screen of the BRAdmin32. Choose Load Firmware from the Control menu. Select the TFTP Get method. Enter the configuration password for the print servers you have selected. Enter the IP address of the TFTP server and enter the name of the file that you have copied to a directory called "TFTPBOOT" on your Unix system. Your print server will try to access the file from the TFTP server that you have specified.
Please ensure that you do not power cycle the device until it reboots itself (this will happen automatically). Please note that it may take upto 1 minute to reprogram and reboot the device.
If the print server is unable to retrieve the file from the TFTP server, you may need to power-cycle or reset the print server in order to recover.

3. NetWare GET (retrieve from a NetWare server)
This method of loading firmware requires that you have a Novell NetWare file server on your network that is using the IPX/SPX protocol. You will need to copy the firmware file into the SYS:LOGIN directory so that it can be retrieved by the print servers without requiring them to login.

To begin with, select one or more print servers from the list on the main screen of the BRAdmin32. Choose Load Firmware from the Control menu. Select the NetWare Get method. Enter the configuration password for the print servers you have selected. Enter the name of the NetWare file server where the firmware file was copied. Finally, press the Load button to begin the load process. BRAdmin32 will send a command to each print server you have selected instructing it to fetch the firmware file from the NetWare file server you specified. After issuing this command, BRAdmin32 will inform you of the results. The print server's themselves will begin the load process independent of BRAdmin32.
Please ensure that you do not power cycle the device until it reboots itself (this will happen automatically). Please note that it may take up to 1 minute to reprogram and reboot the device.
If the print server is unable to fetch the file from the NetWare server, you may need to power-cycle or reset the print server in order to recover.

4. Via parallel interface (upgrade from your PC)
This method of loading firmware requires that you have a PC with a parallel cable which is connected to the printer.

From a command prompt on your PC (Windows users click Start | Programs | MS-DOS prompt) use the copy command to send the firmware file from your PC to the printer. Before you do this, we recommend that you disconnect the printer from the network and then switch the printer off and on again before you upgrade.

For example, to copy a file called BRNT200.BLF to the printer you would use the following command:
COPY /B BRNT200.BLF LPT1:

You must specify the '/B' switch. If you do not, the upgrade will fail.

Please ensure that you do not power cycle the device until it reboots itself (this will happen automatically). Please note that it may take up to 1 minute to reprogram and reboot the device.

Detail procedure of TFTP PUT from your PC>Use this method when upgrading a Brother printer using the BRAdmin32 with a PC that has TCP/IP installed.

1.  Make a note of the IP address information of your printer HL-1270N (for example, the IP address,
     subnet mask etc.)
2.  Start the BRAdmin32 Windows software
3.  Highlight the Brother HL-1270N printer/s that you wish to upgrade (if you have multiple printers,
simply highlight the printers you wish to upgrade and then select "Control" from the main menu
     and then select "Load Firmware".
4.  You will now see the following screen:

Select the "TFTP PUT from this host"(retrieve from this computer) option and then click OK.

5.  You will now see a screen similar to the one below:

6.  Please enter the correct password for the printers that you will be upgrading and also specify the
filename and path to the file.
7.  The printers that you specified will now be upgraded.
Please ensure that you do not power cycle the device until it reboots itself (this will happen
automatically). Please note that it may take upto 1 minute to reprogram and reboot the device.
