The Brother Group constructively takes part in various environmental exhibitions in an effort to make the group's environmental commitment widely known, while raising awareness about environmental activities to encourage people to practice environmental activities in their daily lives.

At Tokyo Big Sight, Eco-Products 2008 (organized by the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry and Nikkei Inc.), one of the largest environmental exhibitions in Japan, was held from December 11 through 13, 2008. This 10th annual event was participated in by 758 companies/organizations, the largest number ever, and was visited by a total of 173,917 persons, again a record high, during the three-day period. Under the commemorative theme of "We Can Do It! Eco-Lifestyle with a 50% CO2 Reduction", an array of specific visions were presented toward a low carbon society as well as a lifestyle in which CO2 emissions can be cut by half.

Brother has joined this event for eight years straight from the third exhibition. Under the theme of "Ideas We Want to Share with You," we demonstrated our environmentally-conscious products and set up panels to give an account of our environmental efforts, including contributions to prevention of global warming through eco-conscious product designs and "eco point" activities. Under the "eco point" program, consumables collected from customers are awarded eco points, which are then used by the Brother Group to plant trees.

We also hosted an annual "Eco Declaration" event, in which 4,633 persons, including small children and senior citizens, made their own declarations for action they can take now for the environment. 93 seedlings (one seedling for every 50 Eco Declarations made at the Brother booth in Eco-Products 2008) will be planted at the Brother Forests in Gujo in spring and autumn. In April 2009, half of the seedlings (47) were planted.

We passed out a questionnaire at our booth, and visitors gave us a lot of comments such as: "Now I can fully understand that Brother is serious about product life cycle," "I think Brother is very friendly to the environment," "I hope Brother will stay committed to eco-conscious activities! I will do my best on my own part," and "The 5R is amazing." These comments have given us new impetus to promote environmental activities.

Messe Nagoya 2008, an event organized by the Messe Nagoya Executive Committee to meet environmental challenges, was held at Port Messe Nagoya under the theme of "Environment and Energy" from September 11 through 14, 2008. The four-day event was participated in by 342 companies/organizations, and was visited by 45,530 persons.

At the Brother booth, we exhibited a garment printer (capable of printing images from PC monitors directly onto garments, etc. via simple operations), the Innovis WP1200 (a sewing machine equipped with embroidery functions released in commemoration of Brother's 100th anniversary), the MyMio (inkjet multi-function center), and other products. We also hosted an eco-tour-like experience program by taking advantage of our on-demand IC tag (RFID) label printer. Participants had fun learning about Brother's environmental efforts as they made a round of the booth while answering quizzes posted at different areas.

At the end of each session of the experience program, participants were asked to make "Eco Declarations." During the four days, 4,840 persons made declarations of their immediate actions for the environment. In October 2008, 242 seedlings (one seedling for every 20 Eco Declarations) were planted at the Brother Forests in Gujo.

The Brother Group will continue to join these events to introduce new technologies as well as activities for contributing to the environment.

From June 19 through 21, 2008, the Integrated Exhibition of the Environment in celebration of the Hokkaido Toyako Summit in 2008 (organized by the Committee for the Integrated Exhibition of the Environment in celebration of the Hokkaido Toyako Summit) was held at the Sapporo Dome. This event was participated in by 333 companies/organizations, and was visited by as many as 83,742 persons during the three days.

The Brother booth was set up based on the theme of "Eco-Lifestyle with Brother Multi-Function Centers." We demonstrated environmentally-conscious products, and held events providing participants with a simulated experience of our "consumables recycling program" that was launched in June. Under this recycling program, collected consumables are given eco points, and seedlings are planted (one seedling for every 10,000 points) in the Brother Forests in Gujo. Points are given to four types of consumables: toner cartridges, drum units, ink cartridges, and P-touch tape cassettes. Different eco points are set for each type of consumables. The booth was designed to guide the participants to the "Eco Declaration" area at the end of an event, where 3,341 persons made declarations of what they can do now for the environment.

On December 13 - 15, 2007, the largest environmental tradeshow in Japan - Eco-Products 2007: Eco Style Fair - was held at the Tokyo Big Site (organized by Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry and Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Inc.).

Capitalizing on the rapidly growing concern over the global environment, the Eco-Products show has expanded in size every year. Now, in it's 9th year, it has evolved into a general tradeshow for people involved with the environment in diverse ways, from businesses, organizations, NGOs, NPOs, governments, universities and research institutes to general consumers (exhibitors: 632, booths: 1,405, visitors: 164,903). The hall is filled with a wide variety of eco-products such as home appliances, daily essentials, office equipment, financial products and services. Brother operated a booth for the 7th time, continuing our uninterrupted streak since the show's 3rd edition.

At the Brother booth, the company's environmental stance was explained via panels. Also, information and communication products were displayed such as the "JUSTIO" business-grade Multi-Function Center/printer and "MyMio" sleek inkjet Multi-Function Center. In order to stir interest in everyone from young students to senior citizens, a questionnaire on environment-friendly products and activities was used and visitors were given the chance to make their own "Eco Declarations" for the environment.

The Eco Declarations were written on trees made of fabric and planted on a ball that symbolized the Earth as a display. About 4,000 people planted trees. Plans are to plant one real seedling for every 20 Eco Declaration trees (about 200 seedlings total) in the Brother Forests in Gujo. Our continual participation in large scale events like this has become great opportunities to publicize Brother's environmental stance and communicate with more people, which should lead to repeat customers, etc.

We introduced the environmental activities of the Brother Group at the MESSE NAGOYA 2006 Eco-Industrial Trade Fair held at the Nagoya Port Messe from October 19 (Thu.) to 21 (Sat.), 2006. Participated in by some 200 businesses, this international tradeshow carried on the environmental theme of the 2005 Expo Aichi Japan by proposing a balance between the environment and business. There were 37,180 visitors during the course of the show.

To project an image of how environmental considerations are shown in manufacturing, panels highlighting the key points of eco-friendly products were put up at the Brother booth. Moreover, to gain the understanding of visitors in a fun interactive way, a quiz/survey was done. Also, some employees showed some environmental magic, which was a popular act.

The event was a great opportunity to gain an understanding of Brother's environmental activities by talking personally with employees as was seen by the enthusiastic questions that visitors asked while answering the quiz.

The Brother Group showed the monochrome laser multi-function center MFC-8870DW, CNC tapping center TC-S2C, domestic sewing machine Innovis P100α and other products. Each internal company gave demonstrations of environmental technologies and explained panels, appealing environmental activities to visitors through the products we make. Within all of that, the quiz rally and a corner set up for visitors to see for themselves how light the sleek color inkjet Multi-Function Center drew great interest from students. Moreover, about 3,000 persons (over 12,000 totals for the 5 years) between employees and visitors attended the Eco Declaration that Brother has made since 2002. We hope this effort will open eyes and encourage everyone to protect the global environment.

Brother (China) Ltd. exhibited at the 2006 China Energy Conservation Exhibit (ECE) held in Shanghai over June 10 (Sat.) - 12 (Mon.), 2006. The event aims to diffuse energy-saving products and raise environmental awareness amongst businesses and consumers. It is part of the efforts of the Chinese government to promote their energy-saving policy. At the Brother booth, which drew a large crowd during the show, 23 products were put on display and videos of Brother Group products and technologies were played on a large-screen TV.

In November 2004, Brother's FAX-218 and FAX-228MC were recognized by Chinese government for their low energy qualities and so rewarded a certification. Currently, eleven facsimiles, four laser printers and nine laser multi-function centers have received this certification. These products greatly reduce paper and toner consumption by digitizing and sharing files and networking with other equipment. Because of this, several hundred consumers visited the booth each day of the fair to hear explanations from staff, try out the products for themselves and fervently ask questions.
