Green Procurement (parts and materials)
Promoting compliance with laws and regulations around the world
Since 2001, the Brother Group has been implementing green procurement activities with which we prioritize parts and materials that show environmental considerations in the procurement and purchasing for all products that we sell. Starting in 2003, we dedicated efforts to completely eliminating from parts and materials the six prohibited substances named in the EU's RoHS Directive *1. Then, in November 2006, we updated our Green Procurement Standards to manage thereafter the 24 substance groups specified by the electric and electronic industries of Japan, the USA and EU in JIG *2. Moreover, in FY2008 (April 1, 2008-March 31, 2009), we began testing for the substances regulated by the EU's PFOS Directive *3 and REACH Regulation *4. Hence, over the years, the Brother Group has been steadfast promoting green procurement activities in compliance with laws and regulations around the world.
*1 RoHS Directive: An EU directive restricting the use of hazardous substances contained in electric and electronic equipment; entered into force in July 2006.
*2 JIG: Joint Industry Guide for Material Composition Declaration for Electronic Products jointly issued by Japan, the USA and EU, with the objective of making it more efficient for businesses in the electric and electronic equipment industries to check for chemical substances in products and parts, establishing standards for parts suppliers to identify specified chemical substances and responding to related inquiries; enforced in May 2005.
*3 PFOS Directive: Prohibits the marketing of products that contain more than the specified amount of perfluorooctane sulfonates in the EU on or after June 27, 2008.
*4 REACH Regulation: An EU regulation providing for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of all Chemical substances contained in manufactured/imported products; entered into force in June 2007; registration deadlines set on a phase-by-phase basis depending on the substance and its volume band.
