Accounting

For greater efficiency in our environmental activities

Concept of environmental accounting

The Brother Group considers it important to annually monitor investments and expenses related to environmental activities, and their effectiveness. Through this action, we can improve the efficiency of environmental activities that will be carried out during the next fiscal year.

Environmental conservation costs and expenses in FY2008

Below are investments and expenditures made by the Brother Group to implement environmental conservation activities.

Investment in Japan: 91 mn JPY
Expenses in Japan: 825 mn JPY
Investment in manufacturing facilities outside Japan: 221 mn JPY
Expenses in manufacturing facilities outside Japan: 261 mn JPY

A solar power system was installed at the Kariya Manufacturing Facility in Japan. This system generates up to 100 kW, which is of similar output as the system installed on the roof of the Mizuho Manufacturing Facility.

Investment in manufacturing facilities outside Japan increased by 140 million JPY. This was spent predominantly to update lighting, compressors and air conditioning to high efficiency ones such as inverter drives at main manufacturing facilities.

In the future, we will consider examining environmental costs in Japan with an eye to "further enhance investment efficiency from a cost performance perspective," while, outside Japan, we will look from a perspective of "whether the necessary measures are truly satisfying or not."

Environmental conservation effects in FY2008

The following figures refer to the economic effect of Environmental Conservation Effects calculated in yen. Effects which could not be quantitatively calculated (e.g. assumed effects, and accidental effects) are not included.

Economic effect of environmental conservation efforts in Japan: 56 mn JPY
Economic effect of environmental conservation efforts outside Japan: 238 mn JPY

Environmental conservation efforts accompanied by the current economy have led to a decrease in waste treatment and recycling activities. However, this decreasing trend is mainly due to the effect of reduced production given the current global economic crisis.

In terms of efforts to reduce energy consumption through the energy saving program, because reduced electricity consumption was due to reduced production, it was very difficult to pinpoint the actual effectiveness of the program. Despite this, however, in our efforts to meet our mid-term goal by FY2010, we have focused our efforts during the FY2008 in placing energy efficient equipments in our facilities. As a result, we were able to achieve a large economic effect.
