The "5R Award" to encourage better environmental activities throughout the group
The Brother Group administers the "5R Award," a system launched in FY2008 (April 1, 2008-March 31, 2009) that covers all the group companies to commend their environmental activities. Specifically, this commendation system is intended to identify the status of, and share, various environmental activities, thereby stimulating and raising the level of environmental activities. Applications are accepted from business sites or departments. The award recognizes efforts by group companies and departments in five different categories, including activities at business sites (such as manufacturing facilities and offices), eco-consciousness reflected in products, eco-publicity in sales activities, and other environmental contributions.
In FY2010 (April 1, 2010-March 31, 2011), a comparison was made per unit sales, especially in evaluating activities for preventing global warming, to eliminate the effect of the scale of respective business sites on the results. Applications were solicited from June to July; 21 applications were accepted in total. Business sites and departments which tackled problems that corporations must address in respective fields and which delivered results were selected. FY2010 marked the third year since the launch of the award. The 5R Award (Environmental Special Contributions) was won by Brother Industries (U.K.) Ltd. for developing new environmental improvement activities each year and continuously posting top-class results, and by the Tennessee Manufacturing Facility of Brother International Corporation (U.S.A.) for greatly assisting sales companies outside Japan to meet CO2 emissions reduction targets. In November 2010, the award-winning business sites and departments made presentations about their activities and received commendations at a Brother Group presentation meeting which was attended by more than 3,000 individuals primarily from manufacturing facilities in Asia, Europe, and the Americas, etc.
In 1998, the Brother Group began to administer the President's Award, a commendation system for all group companies. The award is intended to boost employees' motivation and challenging spirit by recognizing their efforts and accomplishments made throughout the year. The evaluation indices include CO2 reduction rates and eco-conscious community contribution activities.
The Brother Group also runs the Brother eco point program to make employees more eco-aware by commending individuals and groups that earn high points. As of April 1, 2011, 44 facilities have joined the Brother eco point program.
