Brother Industries, Ltd.

Brother Industries, Ltd. (President Toshikazu Koike) has achieved its midterm target for reduction of CO2 emissions from its manufacturing facilities outside Japan, which was set for 2020, seven years ahead of schedule in FY2013.

Under the Brother Group Global Charter established in 1999, the Brother Group is committed to taking positive and continuous actions to reduce its environmental impact in all aspects of its business operations. In 2009, the group set the midterm targets to cut CO2 emissions by 30% (absolute value) from FY1990 (November 21, 1989-November 20, 1990) levels at eight business sites in Japan and to cut CO2 emissions by 20% (per unit of sales) from FY2006 (April 1, 2006-March 31, 2007) levels at manufacturing facilities outside Japan*, by FY2020, in reference to the actions for CO2 reduction proposed by some developed nations at the 2009 United Nations Summit on Climate Change in New York.

The manufacturing facilities are executing energy-saving activities concerning usage of ventilation, power and lighting in order to become an eco-friendly " Eco Factory ." While improving the quality of our products, all the manufacturing facilities are actively and continuously adopting every environmental measure they could take, including acquisition of the ISO 14001 certification, an international standard for environmental management, replacement of deteriorating ventilation systems with new ones with highly-efficient, air-cooling and inverter-run ventilation systems, and use of lighting systems utilizing natural light and highly energy efficient LED lights.

With these efforts, Brother successfully reduced CO2 emissions at the manufacturing facilities outside Japan by 26.9% from FY2006 levels, and achieved one of its midterm targets to cut CO2 emissions by 20% (per unit of sales) from FY2006 (April 1, 2006-March 31, 2007) levels at manufacturing facilities outside Japan*, in FY2013.

As for the midterm target to cut CO2 emissions by 30% (absolute value) from FY1990 (November 21, 1989-November 20, 1990) levels at eight business sites in Japan by FY2020, Brother cut down CO2 emissions by 23.4% (absolute value) from FY1990 levels by FY2013, as originally planned. Respective business sites within Japan will continue to pursue energy-saving activities to achieve the midterm target by FY2020.

Under "Brother Earth," the slogan representing the group's environmental dedications, the Brother Group will continue to take energy-saving measures at its manufacturing facilities and take on challenges in development of new environmental technologies to create a better global environment.

  • *:   The sites subject to the midterm target encompass the manufacturing facilities in 10 different countries and regions outside Japan. The manufacturing facility in the United States is considered part of the premises of the US sales facility. Thus, its CO2 emission is included in that of the US sales facility.
